Pet Anxiety Awareness Month https://www.petanxiety.co.uk/ this March, serves as a crucial reminder of the emotional well-being of our pets. Just like humans, animals experience stress and anxiety, often due to environmental changes, loud noises, or past trauma. This month encourages pet owners to recognize the signs of anxiety in their pets and take proactive steps to address their needs.
Causes and Symptoms of Pet Anxiety
Since lockdown we’ve seen even more dogs suffer anxiety related issues. But anxiety in pets can stem from various factors, including separation from their owners, unfamiliar surroundings, loud noises like fireworks, going to the vets, changes in family unit (new pets, loss of companions, new baby) and of course traumatic past experiences. Dogs in particular, may exhibit stress-related behaviours such as excessive barking, destructive chewing, pacing, trembling, hiding, or even self-harm through excessive licking or biting. In severe cases, anxiety can lead to loss of appetite and inappropriate urination or defecation.

How to Help an Anxious Pet
To ease your dog’s anxiety, routine and structure play a vital role. Establishing consistent feeding, exercise, and sleep schedules can create a sense of security. Additionally, providing a safe space, such as a quiet room or a cozy crate, helps pets feel protected during stressful situations. Calming aids like pheromone diffusers, anxiety wraps, and soothing music can also be beneficial.
For pets with severe anxiety, professional help may be necessary. Vets can recommend behavioural training, therapy, or medication to help manage their stress. Socialization and mental stimulation through play, exercise, and interactive toys can also reduce anxiety.
Yellow Dog charity https://www.yellowdoguk.co.uk/ works with Wood Green Animal Shelter to help promote their online workshops, available here: https://woodgreen.org.uk/courses-and-training/ A lot of the workshops are free and there are also free pre-recorded webinars available on subjects including how to tackle resource guarding, helping your dog cope with visitors to your home and helping your dog cope with fireworks.
The Importance of Awareness
By recognizing Pet Anxiety Awareness Month, dog owners can take meaningful steps to support their dogs’ emotional well-being. Raising awareness about anxiety ensures that more animals receive the care and comfort they deserve, leading to happier and healthier lives.
