Sometimes the dogs who challenge us the most are the ones who change our lives in the most meaningful ways. For Helen, adopting a rescue dog named Monty not only reshaped her daily life but also inspired a creative journey and a deeper commitment to helping dogs who need understanding and space.
Monty’s story is one that many dog owners will recognise – a story about patience, compassion and learning to see the world through a dog’s eyes.

Welcoming a Rescue Dog Into the Family
Monty came into Helen’s life after being found as a stray and spending three years in a rescue centre. Like many rescue dogs, he carried a history that no one fully understood.
He struggled with fear and anxiety, particularly around strangers and other dogs. Simple things like walks or meeting new people could quickly become stressful situations.
However, Helen and her husband were determined to help Monty feel safe and supported in his new home.
Learning About Dogs Who Need Space
During their journey with Monty, Helen discovered the work of Yellow Dog UK.
The Yellow Dog movement raises awareness for dogs who need extra space. These dogs might be nervous, recovering from illness, in training or simply uncomfortable with unfamiliar people or dogs approaching too quickly.
Dogs who need space often wear yellow leads, bandanas or harnesses to signal to others that they should not be approached.
For Helen and Monty, this simple message made a huge difference. By helping others understand Monty’s needs, everyday situations became much easier to manage.
When Challenges Become Opportunities
Like many dogs during the pandemic, Monty also developed separation anxiety when routines suddenly changed.
Helen worked patiently to help him rebuild confidence, adjusting her work schedule and introducing trusted dog sitters while following professional training advice.
Eventually Monty reached a point where he could comfortably stay alone for short periods again.
Those small steps opened the door for Helen to explore something she had always enjoyed – painting.
A Creative Path Inspired by Dogs
Helen joined a local painting class, which quickly became a relaxing and creative outlet.
Although the classes later ended, she continued learning through online tutorials and gradually began experimenting with pet portraits. What started as a hobby soon turned into something much bigger.
Friends began asking Helen to paint their pets, and before long she was receiving regular commissions.
Today, Helen creates wildlife and pet portraits from her home while also teaching art. Her work allows her to celebrate the unique personalities of animals while sharing the special stories behind them.
Supporting the Yellow Dog Message Through Art
Monty’s journey is the reason Helen feels so strongly about supporting Yellow Dog UK and its mission to promote understanding for dogs who need space.
To help raise awareness, Helen donates 10% of the cost of any pet portrait commission to the charity when clients mention Yellow Dog UK.
Through her artwork, she hopes to celebrate the bond people share with their animals while also helping more people understand the needs of sensitive or reactive dogs.
Monty, now over 13 years old, is living a calm and happy life – proof that patience, understanding and the right support can truly transform a rescue dog’s world.
