As half term approaches and we start planning our summer holidays, do you know the best games for play time with your dog? We need to think about our dogs and how they can be part of these holidays. We plan events for ourselves and the children so we also need to think about how we can play and entertain our dogs too. This can be especially true if you have a dog that is more sensitive or has other issues that we at Yellow Dog are particularly aware of, so we thought some Yellow Dog top 5 dog play time tips could be useful…

  1. Bonding with Your Dog – playtime is a great time to bond with your dog, establishing respect and discipline whilst having fun. This time will help your dog to understand his roles with you and this will help with other training when you are out and about.
  2. Find toys that your dog loves, preferably not ones he can destroy too easily though! Whether this is throwing a ball or playing tug of war, dogs love this interaction.
  3. Teach your dog to play gently, not to bite and to also release or drop when asked, this can be a useful habit to establish if you are out and about and they pick up something they should not have!
  4. Treat your dog for good behaviour and nice play, this can be with treats of even ending the play session with something nice on a licky mat https://www.yellowdoguk.co.uk/store/Stress-relief-Slow-Release-Lick-Mat-p364976581
  5. Play hide and seek! Dogs love to find you and you can do this in the house or garden. This gives them both mental and physical stimulation and is fun indoors when the weather is miserable and that walk is not exciting either of you! If your hiding place is so good they cannot find you, calling them also helps with recall training and reminds them just how much fun you are! Behind the sofa, under the table, behind the curtain, they love it and you and the kids will too!!
